It’s time for the annual Pink Ladies Hockey Club table quiz fundraiser!
We’ll be returning to our adopted club-house, The Front Lounge, on Wednesday 18th June at 8:00PM for an evening of trivia and divilment…
MC extraordinaire Una Mullally will be serving up the questions and some rounds with a twist – €10 per head, four people to a table, start getting your team together and swotting up, we’ve got some WHOPPER prizes lined up for the winners! Let us know if you’re coming along and get the trash-talking started on the Facebook event page!
There’ll also be a raffle on the night with some super treats up for grabs, PLUS a very special additional draw for the hockey players amongst the crowd… more details on that soon!
First – a bit of background info… Green Ribbon Month offers a chance to get talking about mental health. See Change, the organisation behind it, aim to change minds about mental health one conversation at a time – so, wearing a green ribbon shows both your support for the campaign and indicates to those around you that you are part of this movement. Now in its second year, Green Ribbon Month has a huge amount of events taking place across the country.
On Wednesday 21st May DLL and GNI’s Green Ribbon Series will tackle the topic of the benefits of exercise on mental health with GOOD MOOD MOVES. Taking place in Outhouse on Capel Street and kicking off at 7:00PM, this FREE event promises a relaxed space for people to chat about exercise, without feeling pressured or judged. Some Pink Ladies will be on hand to talk about the Club and their own experiences!
Congratulations to Simone Smyth, who was selected as the winner of the inaugral Pink Ladies Golden Stick Award!
The draw took place at last week’s Committee meeting. There were a grand total of 18 names in the hat* (*Vice Club Captain Jen’s kitchen colander) – that means there were 18 Pink Ladies who made it to a minimum of three out of the first five training sessions in Pembroke be it to coach, play, or cheer from the sidelines!
Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm and dedication to training so far this season. Thanks also to the kind folks in Grays Hockey for their support – we’re so delighted that Simone has traded in the crutches and replaced them with her whopper new Grays Nano 5 composite stick!
The Dublin Pride Run takes place on Friday 20th June @ 7:30PM in Phoenix Park.
This is the third year Dublin Frontrunners have organised the Pride Run, and the event has gone from strength to strength, becoming a staple of both the LGBT and athletics calendars. Registration costs just €20, you can sign up by clicking HERE.
Some of the Pink Ladies took on the 5KM challenge last year and had an absolute BALL, so we’ll defo be heading back for more this year! A few members have already registered – so what are you waiting for? GET SIGNED UP!
PRISM Sports Ireland is the new national representative association for LGBT sports and recreational organisations, and us Pink Ladies are delighted to be involved!
As a brand new organisation, PRISM are in need of the perfect logo – there’s a competition in the works – a perfect opportunity to flex those design muscles and get involved! Full details here…
Well, to say we’re ‘tickled pink’ by the turnout for the first training session of the new season is an understatement… great to see so many Pink Ladies down for the first one, and even better to see a few new faces in the mix! As per Pink Ladies tradition the sun shone bright, as Coach Ali put us through our paces – no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
A few people were enquiring about hockey gear, and where to get your hands on it – we’d recommend checking out Ed Sports (on site in Pembroke HC), Gilmour Sports (located in Sandyford) or GW Hockey (located in Dundrum). If you fancy shopping further afield, Hockey World in Cork is also good for some online finds. Now is a great time to strike – with the club hockey season just coming to an end, there are some SUPER sale deals to be gotten on gear!
No need to go maxing out your credit card for our sake, though – just make sure to have the basics of a stick, shin-pads and a mouth-guard for training each week. If you have any questions about gear, just ask – that’s what we’re here for!
Time to dust off those hockey sticks, dig your shin-guards out from under the bed, and re-mould that gumshield – because Pink Ladies training is BACK!
Sunday 23rd March is the date set for the first training session of the new season – so put it in your diary, set a reminder, write it on your forehead – do whatever you have to do to make sure you’re in Pembroke Hockey Club @ 4:00PM! You never know, there may be cool refreshing pints to be had in the clubhouse afterwards… stranger things have happened.
New members are ALWAYS welcome in Pink Ladies Hockey Club, so don’t forget to spread the word – if you’ve any friends who fancy coming along to try it out, further details are available HERE or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Over the weekend, some of the Pink Ladies donned their finery to attend the fifth annual GALAS LGBT Awards in The Shelbourne Hotel!
The GALAS were created in 2009 by GCN and The National Lesbian and Gay Federation “to encourage and reward those LGBT people who give of themselves for the greater good of their community, to show them that their efforts do not go unsung and that they are an incredible resource which we all value beyond measure”.
Amongst the nominees this year was our very own founder Etain Kidney, who was nominated for ‘Volunteer of the Year’! Etain may not have taken home the award on the night, but to see her name in lights in such a prestigious category had us absolutely BEAMING with pride – for Pink Ladies Hockey Club quite simply would not exist without her selfless dedication over the past three years. TAINER, TAINER, TAINER!
Also, BIG congratulations to Ireland’s only gay mens soccer team, Dublin Devils FC, on winning the award for ‘Sports Group of the Year’!
The annual general meeting of Pink Ladies Hockey Club took place yesterday evening, kicking off in exciting fashion with the announcement that we will be participating in London PinkHockey Fest 2014! Also, super news that we’ll be returning to our adopted homestead of Pembroke Hockey Club to train in advance of the tournament… more details on that to follow!
As part of the A.G.M, a new committee was elected for the coming season. Taking over the Club Captain reins from our fearless leader Etain Kidney will be Amy O’Connell; Caoimhe Hickey passes the Vice Club Captain baton onto Jen Hayde; Lucie Crichlow will be showing the Secretary ropes to Louise Fitzgerald; Gráinne O’Shea is handing over the number-cruncher duties of Treasurer to Eleanor Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh; and finally Fiona Cullen is divvying up the convivial responsibilities of Social Secretary between Orla Ryan and Elaine Buckley.
Etain, Caoimhe, Lucie, Gráinne, and Fiona – we’ve put the kettle on, now put your feet up and have a well earned rest… and from the very bottom of our shportsh-heartsh (‘sports hearts’, for those who don’t speak Dutch), we’d like to say a sincere and massive THANK YOU for your phenomenal efforts in creating, building and maintaining Pink Ladies Hockey Club over the past few years. All of your hard work and dedication behind the scenes has been hugely appreciated by all!
To say that the new Committee have BIG shoes to fill is an understatement – BUT, they’re up to the challenge and looking forward to getting stuck into plotting and planning a whole lotta Pink Lady fun-times!
So , all that’s left to report is – PINK LADIES SEASON IV IS GO!
